FROM WOUNDS AND WONDERS
A theatrical performance in German
SHE and HE live together in their 50-square-metre apartment, equipped with an automatic cat-food dispenser and no balcony. She has a permanent companion: anxiety. She is afraid of everything that awaits her outside the apartment: noise, traffic, and any form of human interaction.
He dreams of having a child with her—his second child, whom this time he would genuinely like to take responsibility for. Their only connections to the outside world are waiting for the Telekom technician, the Amazon parcel to arrive at their front door, and their monthly appointments with Max, their osteopath.
The couple attempts to escape the reassuring solitude of their four walls through a role-playing game, and it soon becomes clear that the boundary between reality and fiction is becoming increasingly blurred. For what begins as an innocent attempt at getting a tattoo in their own living room ultimately leads to a real confrontation over questions of privilege, social class, and the apparent incompatibility of their respective life paths.
And just when everything seems to have been reduced to pieces, Madame Hunzen, an official expert in miracles and healing, appears out of nowhere. With her decidedly formidable presence, she breaks into this previously intimate world of two—without taboos.
Out of this seemingly hopeless conflict, a glimmer of hope suddenly emerges, one that might, after all, restore a sense of purpose to their relationship as a couple.
In “From Wounds and Wonders,” Sarah Kilter takes a sharply humorous and incisive look at the abyss of a normality that goes round and round in ever-tightening circles, revolving around a misery that refuses to disappear—but above all, revolving around herself.
